„Labels“ was produced by the Art Video Studio in the framework of the project „Mobilizing the Disability Community to Speak out for the Rights of Persons with Mental Disabilities,“ implemented by the Russian Disability NGO Perspektiva, with support from the Open Society Institute. Financial support to produce, translate and subtitle the film was also provided by the UN Russia office. „Labels“ premiered in Moscow on October 18 to a crowd of nearly 600 people. It will also be screened in Moscow in November and December, 2011, at two prestigious documentary film festivals.
„Labels“ is a film about people who are on the edge of the Universe — persons with mental disabilities, who are ignored, insulted and even feared by many. Through poetry and the words of family members, viewers are drawn into the rich world of four individuals with disabilities and their families.
Viewers learn about the struggle of these families to enrich the lives of their children who have been rejected by the rest of the community. Most importantly, viewers learn about four individuals and their amazing abilities and desire to belong. Finally, this film presents us with a different way to look at people with mental disabilities that is unbiased and free from stereotypes and labels.
